South Beach History and Real Estate

Well known to many as SoBe, South Beach was the first section of Miami Beach that was developed and used by those coming and going from the area. Developed in the 1910’s and later helped with the Collins Bridge that was built to connect the islands to Miami, this area soon flourished and was built into something that provided everyone with a place to build and grow.

The land was originally purchased for coconut farming and the original owner, Charles Lum built the first home on the beach back in 1886. John Collins took over control of the farm and the land in 1894.

Come 1912, the Lummus Brothers were the next to own more property on the island. They developed this land into oceanfront modest properties that they sold to families looking to move to the area. The large bridge that connects the island to the main land was constructed come 1913 by Collins, but he never finished it because he ran out of money before the job was done. This is when Carl G. Fisher came into town and loaned the money to finish the bridge to the mainland, which has since been replaced with the Venetian Causeway.

The Lummus Brothers sold their properties to the city and this was later named Lummus Park, which is still standing to this day. Consolidating their efforts, Fisher, Lummus and Collins all brought their pieces together to create Miami Beach.

The boom began in the 1920’s when the population started to grow, more businesses started to open, presidents came to stay and people were building homes right on the beach. J.C. Penney, Harry C. Shultz and Harvey Firestone, millionaires of their time all came to the area to live and purchase property, making it even more famous than it was beforehand.

The 30’s brought a wave of architectural beauty and splendor with the largest collection of Streamline Moderne Art and plenty of other offerings. South Beach prides themselves on the large collection that they currently house.

The area was attacked alongside Pearl Harbor and Miami took over the island in 1941. The 60’s 70’s and 80’s brought a lot of new attention because of the nightclubs that were put in the square, as well as many famous people coming and going from the area. These points in time saw retired individuals living in small houses by the ocean, and even a boom in cocaine dealers living and selling in the area.

The area has been through a lot, but currently it is a beautiful place to spend time, to vacation at, to bring your family or just to go for the nightlife.
