The history of Miami Beach is just as rich as the history of the other cities throughout the state. As a beach town, you can expect to see a lot of tourists coming and going and that rang true for the area when it first was developed, as well. Learn more about the history of this beautiful area and why you may want to consider it for your next home or vacation getaway destination.
Miami Beach is part of three different areas of beaches. North and South Beach and Miami Beach. Miami Beach can provide those looking for a place to call home with a wonderful option. This area guarantees that the future for all living within is going to be bright.
Incorporated into the area in 1915, before many of the other cities found around it, Miami Beach has always been a destination that inspired many. Located in the man-made barrier islands sitting between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, it provides everyone with plenty of sea and sand. With a population over 90,000, it didn’t always start out so large but has since been growing.
It is one of America’s pre-eminent beach resorts that provides visitors with everything that they need while visiting a place that is beautiful, warm and has plenty to do.
The area was purchased in 1870 by a father and son for 75 cents an acre. The first building, the Biscayne House of Refuge, was built in 1876. This house provided food, shelter, water and other means to those that might have been shipwrecked in the area. A coconut plantation was the next put into the area along the shores in the 1880’s. Avocados were later added to the land and thrived. The railroad arrived just before 1900 and once it was put in, the area continued to thrive and grow.
There was a hotel that was put in come 1915 to house those that were coming through, and those working on the crops in the farms along the shores. Bath houses and food stands, as well as small modest homes were all that were found along the area until later on in the 1900’s. Most of the land during this time was jungle.
In the 1920’s more information made its way around the area, and the site was to be developed for wealthy industrialists that wanted to build and develop on an empty land. They wanted to provide lavish options for those looking for a better life on Miami Beach. They eventually made plenty of points to where Miami Beach met with the other cities that were man-made. Even a manmade bridge was created, the largest of it’s time coming in at 2.5 miles long to connect the island to the main land, providing easier access for one and all.
For even more interesting history on Miami Beach, take a look through the Art Deco Historic District where they provide further information on the area. After being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, this became a large piece of the area. Many of the apartments, hotels and buildings in this district were erected between 1923 and 1943 and continue to provide lodging and business space for those living in the area.
