Sunny Isles Beach also known as "The Venice of America" and "The Billionaire's Row" started with humble beginnings in 1920 when Harvey Graves bought nineteen hundred acres of land on the Miami coast with the intention of creating a tourist resort. Several developers began creating islands and peninsulas when the Haulover Bridge was completed in 1925, but progress was slow in the beginning, which was hampered by the Great Depression. Soon after, a twelve hundred seat speedway that became known for begin the world's fastest with vehicles reaching speeds of one hundred and ten miles per hour, was built in the area that is now known as North Miami Beach on the current site of Diplomat Presidential Country Club. The events featured at that raceway were the precursor to the races at Daytona and Sebring. In the early 1930s Sunny Isles was purchased by another speculator, Kurtis Froedtert, shortly after the Sunny Isles Pier was built and became a popular destination for tourists and fishermen.
Sunny Isles Beach real estate - started developing around 1950s and 1960s, which is considered by some to be the golden age of Sunny Isles, with a number of motels along the iconic Collins Avenue. One of the first hotels happened to be the Ocean Palm, which was the first two-story motel in the U.S. Designed by Norman Giller and owned by the Gingold family. It was this motel that, with its Art Deco style, became the gold standard for motel design in the US for several decades and lead to the surge of development in the area, with over fifteen motels built within the 1950s alone. During this time the Sunny Isles became a popular tourist destination for working class post war families who were escaping the northern winters as well as a contingent of international visitors. There were also a number of exotic themed motels such as the Fountianhead that became popular destinations of tourists who traveled from far and wide to experience "Motel Row." Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner spent their honeymoon there and even The Beatles visited Sunny Isles and hung out at the Castaways Motel's famous Wreck Bar, a bar housed inside a Spanish Galleon submerged in one of the pools, just south of Sunny Isles Boulevard. During the 1970s the motels became to be replaced in favor of condominiums and the Isles started its transition from a tourist destination to luxury residential. The Castaways was demolished in 1984 and the Oceania Towers was constructed on its site in the 1990s. The complex became very popular and many new residents began to call the popular oceanfront community home.
Sunny Isles was renamed Sunny Isles Beach when it was incorporated as a municipality in 1997 with a new fifty five story zone. This resulted in a real estate boom which is present to this day. Today, the construction is mostly for luxury oceanfront condominiums and hotels alongside the fantastic Collins Avenue. The two and a half mile long strip spans from the award winning Regalia condo, with striking architecture and bespoke design on the North side to the opulent Ritz Carlton, with private beach, private breakfast and dining rooms, on the South.
